Types Of Motocross Races

Motocross began during the 1920’s and since that time it has grown to become one of the world’s most popular extreme sports. It is performed throughout the United States, Europe, and even in parts of Asia. The high speed races and the hard to pass obstacles on the track make it exciting and difficult. To better understand the sport you have to know the different types of races.

Freestyle Racing

Freestyle – also known as FMX – is very similar to the standard motocross races. The biggest difference is that each driver earns points by the amount of tricks they perform, rather than who comes in first place. The most popular tricks include the backflip, frontflip, underflip, 360, scorpion, tsunami, and the sidewinder.

Supermoto

This type of racing began during the 1970’s as a sort of project for professional motocross racers. During this race the riders will modify their bikes so that they can race on pavement and dirt tracks. Each bike must have a set of special tires with grooves that will handle both during one race.

Trials

This is a simple time trial motocross race in which the drivers are on dirt tracks. The primary goal is not tricks – but to get the best time. Hill climb is a type of trial race in which each rider must drive up a hill the fastest.

Supercross

Supercross races are large events that will take place on fairgrounds, in an arena, or in a large stadium. Each of these sites will have an artificial dirt track installed that are made up of numerous obstacles. Only the best motorcycles are used for these races because they must be able to handle the sharp curves and the impact of the high jumps.
